Search engine optimisation has a reputation for jargon and promises. For a small business, the work that matters is mostly practical: help Google understand your site, and give people a reason to choose it. Here is where to start.

1. Make sure Google can find and read your site

Set up Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and check that your pages are indexed. Fix pages that load slowly on a phone — speed affects both rankings and whether visitors stay.

2. One clear page per service

A single "Services" page listing everything rarely ranks for anything. Give each main service its own page, with a descriptive title, one main heading and genuinely useful content about it. This is also what makes a site easy to use.

3. Write for what people actually search

Use the words your customers use, not internal jargon. Keyword research shows how people phrase their searches and how many make them — it is worth checking before you write, not after.

4. Complete your Google Business Profile

For a business serving a local area, the Business Profile is often as visible as the website. Use the right categories, accurate hours and contact details, real photos, and reply to reviews.

5. Structured data

Structured data tells search engines what a page is about — a business, a product, a service, an article. It does not guarantee anything, but it removes guesswork.

What to ignore

  • Ranking guarantees — nobody outside Google controls the results.
  • Bought links — they break Google’s guidelines and can get a site penalised.
  • Keyword stuffing — repeating a phrase reads badly to people and is ignored or penalised by search engines.

How long does SEO take?

Technical fixes can show within weeks. Content usually takes months to build traction. If you need customers sooner, paid campaigns can bring traffic while SEO builds.
